“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
The apostle Paul
This epistle was written while Paul was incarcerated in Rome likely awaiting execution. It is the last epistle he wrote and understandably it takes on a somber note. He has been abandoned by many of his associates and friends with an exception of Timothy who through this epistle will be encouraged to press on for Jesus.
Many look for a theme in each of the epistles, but most are so diverse it's hard to narrow ot down to one idea or theme. But I do agree with J. Vernon McGee when he wrote in his commentary that if one had to choose one word to describe this book that word would be ‘loyalty’, here's what he wrote:
(1) loyalty in suffering (ch. 1); (2) loyalty in service (ch. 2); (3) loyalty in apostasy (ch. 3–4:5); and (4) Lord loyal to His servants in desertion (ch. 4:6–22).[1]
Besides the words of encouragement for Timothy which should also be motivational for us readers today, Paul offers some prophetic insight that could easily be considered a description our moral condition in this present age. But perhaps this book is known for is “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16, ESV) a reminder that not only did God inspire the Bible, it should be understood that He is the source, if we revere Him then we should revere His Word and trust it as being true.
Every worker in the kingdom of God, which is every believer, should read this epistle as the instructions given to Timothy nearly two-thousand years ago still are applicable. While the concept of loyalty has been largely erased in our self-oriented world today, there is great benefit and unimaginable blessings when believers work together serving God.
